SMART Recovery

What is SMART Recovery?

SMART Recovery is a science-based, peer-support program designed to help individuals manage addiction through evidence-based tools grounded in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). In contrast to traditional 12-step programs, SMART focuses on empowerment, self-reliance, and the cultivation of practical skills. In 2025, SMART Recovery formally integrated a harm reduction approach into its facilitator training, a shift that, according to their website, aligns more closely with the program’s core values of inclusion and empowerment. This is in contrast to the statements made in the above video which does well in elaborating on the SMART Recovery program outside of this small adaptation to scientific and evidence-based evolution in just the past year since it was published alone. This highlights the fact that SMART Recovery will never fall behind the times like AA/NA has in treating people based on current medically accepted views on addiction/substance use disorders.

While abstinence remains the optimal strategy for addressing the risks of addictive substances, SMART now acknowledges that for many, moderation and harm reduction are often the more immediate goals. Whether an individual is striving for full abstinence, seeking to moderate their use, or aiming to minimize harm, SMART Recovery recognizes that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. A recent SMART Recovery podcast has even highlighted how the use of psychedelics can facilitate recovery which is something that Rise Above The Risk has been working to promote for years independent of more mainstream acceptance.

How It Works

Through group meetings and self-directed exercises, participants learn to manage cravings, set realistic goals, and build healthier habits. SMART encourages personal responsibility and provides tools to navigate recovery challenges. Whether an individual is uncertain if SMART Recovery will work for them and is just giving it a trial run, or if they are fully dedicated, the person will walk away having learning new means of managing their problematic substance use/compulsive behavior.

Why It’s Effective

SMART’s focus on CBT-based tools has been shown to reduce relapse rates and improve recovery outcomes. It appeals to individuals looking for a secular, evidence-driven alternative to AA or NA. Additionally, now that a harm reduction forward approach is being promoted in facilitator training, the overall success rates should increase based on available evidence showing how such tends to improve outcomes in those with substance use disorders/compulsive behaviors.

Why Choose SMART Recovery?

Flexible Approach: Supports moderation or abstinence based on individual goals.

Empowering: Encourages self-management and personal growth.

Secular Model: Welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.

How It Benefits Society

By promoting self-reliance and reducing relapse rates, SMART Recovery strengthens individuals and families, benefiting entire communities. The ultimate goal is to help people "graduate" from self-destructive behaviors, but in the meanwhile a harm reductionist view rather than an abstinence-only model is adopted by group facilitators thus allowing for those who find occasional use works for them when done safely to do what works best rather than force someone else's program onto the person in recovery.
